Preparing for FRCR Part 1? Anatomy and Physics reward almost opposite study strategies. Here is how to approach each, plus the preparation plan that gets candidates through.

Preparing for FRCR Part 1? Most candidates treat Anatomy and Physics as one block of revision to be ground through together. They are not. The two papers reward almost opposite approaches, and treating them the same way costs you time you do not have.

Here is how to approach each, and the plan that consistently works.

The two papers, side by side

Anatomy is recognition under mild time pressure: 100 images in 90 minutes, which works out to a little under a minute per image, two marks each, and no negative marking. It is normal anatomy only: no pathology, no diagnosis, no rare variants.

Physics is different in kind. You judge a series of statements as true or false, the time pressure is genuine, and every modality is fair game, including radiation safety and protection policy, which candidates routinely underestimate. The pass mark for both papers is set per cohort rather than fixed.

Anatomy: put the textbooks away

For Anatomy, reading textbooks is largely wasted effort. You have read enough of those already. Two things move the needle:

  • An atlas, ideally a radiological atlas, to build fast, confident recognition across every modality.

  • A large volume of timed practice questions, done against the clock until recognition becomes reflex rather than recall.

A few things worth knowing before you start:

  • It is all normal anatomy. No pathology, no diagnosis, no obscure variants. Do not disappear down the rabbit hole of rare variants and neglect the 99% that actually appears.

  • Learn the common normal variants that recur, a manageable, finite list, and a little function alongside the naming. Questions often ask what passes through a foramen, what a structure is a branch of, what attaches where, or which vertebral level you are at.

  • Ultrasound is sparse and limited to highly identifiable structures, so do not over-invest there.

  • The clock is not your enemy. Close your eyes and open them when you think a minute has passed. Almost everyone opens early. Under a minute per image is more room than it sounds. Aim to make recognition automatic, and go in targeting 100%. Strong anatomy carries you through 2A, 2B, and the rest of your career.

Physics: here you do need a book

Physics is where the advice reverses. You do need a core reference text, but one, not ten. Spreading yourself across a shelf of books fragments the concepts you are trying to lock in. Build the concept first, then drill the questions.

A sequence that works:

  • Concepts before questions. Read a modality properly, then do that modality's question module. Getting a few wrong is how the concept actually embeds.

  • Save mixed, timed papers for the end. Once your concepts are solid, sit full mixed-modality papers against the clock to rehearse real exam conditions.

  • Cover every modality. You cannot drop MRI physics because it is hard. Weighting shifts between sittings: one paper may lean heavily on nuclear medicine, another on radiation safety policy.

  • Do not skip the policy. Radiation protection and safety are easy to leave to last and easy to forget. They can carry a surprising number of marks. Leave them late if you must, but never leave them out.

A timing technique for the physics paper: give each multi-part question a fixed budget of around two and a half minutes, and move on the moment it is up, even if one part has you stuck. Return to the difficult ones at the end. Later questions often jog loose the answer you could not reach the first time, and the fixed budget leaves you ten minutes or so at the end to do exactly that.

The plan that works for both

Candidates who pass comfortably tend to follow a similar arc: roughly six months of preparation plus a final month of revision.

  • Months 1 to 3: build the foundation. Atlases and your core physics text; get the concepts in.

  • Months 4 to 6: layer in practice. Region-by-region and modality-by-modality questions, building up to full mixed mocks. Make your mistakes here. Every time you get something wrong, read around it so the same error cannot recur.

  • Final month: consolidate. By now the mistakes should have stopped. This month tells you where you stand, not where you are still guessing.

One more thing that reliably helps: do not study alone. A group of two or three gives you built-in examiners and a frame of reference for how your preparation is really going. Two or three is the sweet spot; larger groups become a scheduling problem and a clash of opinions.

Look after yourself, too

How you carry yourself into the exam matters as much as what you know.

  • Sleep and hydrate; do not lean on caffeine. Memory is partly state-dependent, so you want to recall in your natural, well-rested state, not one you can only reach with three coffees.

  • If something puts you at a disadvantage under pressure, such as ADHD or anything similar, do not ignore it. Speak to your GP or the relevant service early and ask about support and accommodations. It is not fair to know the material and lose marks to a barrier you could have addressed.

  • A resit does not define you. Strong radiologists have sat a component more than once and gone on to do very well. It is a marathon, not a sprint, so ask for support early.

Prepare the way the exam actually works

Part 1 rewards structured, exam-realistic practice far more than volume of reading: recognition drilled to reflex for Anatomy, concepts built then tested for Physics.
