About the course

The RR-ELR FRCR 2B Live Viva Course is an intensive live course for radiologists preparing for the FRCR 2B examination, run four times a year in partnership with Everlight Radiology. Candidates work through carefully selected cases under genuine examination conditions with experienced examiners and consultant faculty, presenting aloud, being questioned and cross-examined, and receiving direct feedback on both their radiology and their examination technique.

That rehearsal under pressure is the whole point. The first time a candidate feels the particular pressure of the viva should not be in the examination itself.

Where the course came from

The course began in 2008, when Koshy Jacob was a fourth-year registrar in Bristol. It started as a small project to raise money for computers and books for the registrars' room at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, and grew from there, shaped year after year by what delegates and consultants told us was working and what was not.

Over the following decade the South West FRCR Course became one of the most sought-after FRCR courses in the UK. It was among the first to be granted examiners' CPD points, and it pioneered the use of examiner assessment to maintain the standard of case selection and examination technique. Much of what Revise Radiology is today grew out of these courses.

We also run regular webinars on key FRCR 2B teaching topics, which remain open to the wider radiology community.

Why the name has changed

For most of its life the course was known as the South West, or Bristol, course, and the name was accurate. People travelled to Bristol, and the name told the truth about where the teaching came from.

Our candidates now come from the UK, Ireland, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Middle East, Australia and beyond, and for a radiologist in Chennai, Dubai or Dublin the words "South West" say very little. A course name should help a learner work out whether something is for them. When it starts doing the opposite, it needs to change.

The faculty has not changed. The purpose has not changed. If anything the course is better than it has ever been.

Our partnership with Everlight Radiology
