You have 120 minutes. Twenty-five cases. Under five minutes each to read the images, identify the findings, form a diagnosis, and write your report. The FRCR 2B Short Case session is not a test of knowledge alone. It is a test of speed, prioritisation, and clinical judgement under pressure.

The skill is knowing what matters

Short Cases are not simply about recognising a diagnosis. They test how quickly you can interpret the images, identify the important findings, reach a diagnosis and give the appropriate management or recommendation.

For each case, you write a short report covering your observations, diagnosis and recommendation. You do not need full sentences or to fill the box.

You need to move quickly through a fixed sequence:

Observations → Diagnosis → Management / Recommendation → Report

The challenge is deciding what is important, what can be left out and what the appropriate next step is. Most candidates know enough radiology to pass. The difficulty is executing that sequence accurately -case after case, when the clock is running.

Time changes everything

With 25 cases in 120 minutes, there is no room for lengthy reports or unnecessary differentials. Every extra sentence costs you time you do not have on the next case.

Short Case practice builds three things: faster pattern recognition, cleaner decision-making, and a reliable reporting structure you can repeat under pressure.

Short does not mean incomplete

A concise answer is not a rushed one. A good Short Case answer demonstrates that you can:

• Recognise the key imaging findings

• Give the appropriate diagnosis

• Identify the relevant management or recommendation

• Communicate your answer clearly and efficiently

You do not need to fill the box. You need to be right, relevant, and clear in the time available.

The challenge is not knowing radiology. The challenge is deciding what matters and communicating it clearly when the clock is running.
