If your FRCR 2B is approaching, you've probably questioned whether spotters earn their place in your revision. It's a fair question. Some candidates feel spotters are a waste of time and would rather pour every spare hour into viva and short-case practice.

It's worth challenging that assumption. Used well, spotters are one of the most efficient ways to prepare for 2B. Here's why.

Volume builds pattern recognition

The 2B exam tests breadth. You'll meet cases from every subspecialty, and the examiners aren't testing whether you've memorised one condition inside out. They're testing whether you can recognise a wide range of appearances across the board.

Spotters force you to cycle through dozens of diagnoses in a single sitting. That trains your eye to pick up the key features of each one - quickly, and without overthinking.

Speed matters

Every part of 2B gives you limited time per case. There isn't room to reason from first principles on the day. You need instant recall.

Spotter practice is what builds it. The more cases you expose yourself to, the more automatic your recognition becomes.

Spotters reveal your blind spots

Work through twenty to thirty spotters in one session and you quickly find out which subspecialties trip you up.

That feedback loop is invaluable in the weeks before the exam. It tells you exactly where your remaining revision time should go, instead of leaving you to guess.

Where viva practice fits

Viva and long- and short-case practice matter too, but they do a different job. That's where you build your presentation skills, your structured approach, and your ability to discuss a case under examiner pressure.

Think of it this way:

• Spotters build the knowledge base - fast recognition across subspecialties.

• Viva practice teaches you to communicate that knowledge under pressure.

They aren't competing priorities. They're complementary. One without the other leaves a gap the exam will find.
